Guide Plan for Workshop Sessions

We don’t just ‘teach’ dance: for us, dance is a tool for so much more, including, most importantly, creativity. We give participants the tools to be creative by including a certain amount of taught choreography as a jumping off point for their own ideas.

All Dance Blast sessions consist of the following five sections but will vary according to the environment, the participants, and the aims. The movement and creative sections can be swapped and/or amended depending on the group or the workshop brief.

WARM UP:
To prepare the body for dance. Includes: -
Games ie: Name game, stuck in the mud, tag and other activities that:
quicken the heart rate
mobilise the spine
mobilise the joints
mobilise the limbs

MOVEMENT SECTION:
A taught movement phrase set, which will often be the foundation for the creative section. This will concentrate on a specific type of movement eg:
action
dynamic
spatial
relationship

CREATIVE SECTION:
Working individually or in groups, participants will work through tasks set by the tutor, in order to create their own work. We’ll either use a theme to ignite inspiration (eg visual images or a piece of music), or the tasks will relate to the type of movement we explored earlier in the session.

EVALUATION:
Individuals or groups show the creative work devised in the session to other members of the group. This provides an opportunity for constructive debate, where participants to comment and discuss movement vocabulary, sharing what they like or don’t like, and why. This constructive debate improves people’s understanding of dance, of their own creativity, and the importance of reflecting on their work.

COOL DOWN:
Stretching and relaxing the muscles after exertion to avoid muscle tension. This includes:
limb stretches
back stretches
breathing exercises
